What to Bring to Your MA Permit Test
Last updated 2026-07-31
The core documents and fee
Bring identification that satisfies the RMV's REAL ID or Standard document checklist (they differ, so check Mass.Gov/ID beforehand), proof of Massachusetts residency, and your Social Security number. If you're under 18, your parent or guardian needs to sign the application.
The exam itself costs $30, covering just the cost of the test -- the road test ($35) and license-issuance ($50) fees come later, and you can actually prepay both at this same appointment if you want one less RMV visit down the road.
The exam covers four topics, with a real time limit
The 25-question learner's permit exam covers alcohol and drug laws, JOL rules, rules of the road, and road-sign identification. You have 25 minutes total to finish, and need at least 18 correct (72%) to pass.
RMV Full Service Centers use automated testing kiosks that deliver questions visually, budgeting about one minute per question -- the exam is also available in multiple languages through those kiosks and online.
You can actually take the exam online, not just at a service center
After submitting your application, Massachusetts lets you take the learner's permit exam online at Mass.Gov/RMV instead of at a service-center kiosk -- a genuinely convenient option many first-time applicants don't realize exists.
If you pass online but can't print the permit yourself, call the RMV Contact Center (857-368-8110) and they'll print it and mail it to you within five to seven business days.
What you can't bring into the testing area
Driver's manuals and other reference material aren't allowed in the testing area, and neither are electronic devices of any kind -- including audio devices or headphones, unless you're taking an audio version of the exam. Hats are barred too, except for medical or religious reasons.
- No driver's manual or written reference material
- No phone or other electronic device, even if it's turned off
- No audio devices or headphones (unless taking an audio exam)
- No hats, except for a documented medical or religious reason
The manual is explicit that using any of these during the exam counts as cheating, which fails you outright -- there's no partial-credit exception for a device that was "just in a pocket."
Vision test and photo, the same day
You'll also need to pass a vision test at the service center, or submit an RMV vision-screening certificate from your own medical practitioner in advance, plus have your photo and signature captured electronically -- both happen as part of the same appointment as the exam.
Since a learner's permit isn't valid as travel ID (it won't be accepted by airlines or cruise lines as a state-issued photo ID), don't count on it for anything beyond driving practice, even though it does carry your photo.
