How Roundabouts Work, and Why They're Safer Than Four-Way Intersections
Roundabouts confuse a lot of new drivers the first few times, mostly because there's no light or stop sign telling you exactly when to go. Once you know the actual procedure, they're simpler than a traditional intersection — and the real crash data explains why more cities keep building them.
The actual procedure
- Slow down as you approach — roundabout geometry is designed to force lower speeds, typically around 15-20 mph in an urban roundabout.
- Yield to traffic already circulating in the roundabout, and to any pedestrians in the crosswalk.
- Enter when there's a safe gap. You don't need a complete stop the way you would at a stop sign — if the way is clear, keep moving.
- Travel counterclockwise around the center island.
- Signal your exit, and don't stop once you're in the circle unless it's genuinely necessary for safety.
Why roundabouts exist: the real safety numbers
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety studied 24 U.S. intersections converted from stop-sign or signal control to roundabouts, and found:
- A 90% reduction in fatal and incapacitating-injury crashes.
- A 76% reduction in all injury crashes.
- A 38% reduction in crashes of all severities combined.
Other U.S. studies IIHS cites land in a similar range — injury-crash reductions of roughly 72-80% and all-crash reductions of roughly 35-47% after converting an intersection to a roundabout. Even at rural, high-speed intersections (40+ mph) converted from stop control, one study found an 85% reduction in injury crashes and a 62% reduction in crashes overall.
Why the numbers are this dramatic
Most of the benefit comes from what a roundabout removes, not what it adds. A traditional intersection has multiple points where vehicle paths cross at high angles and higher speed — exactly the kind of collision most likely to cause serious injury (T-bone crashes). A roundabout's geometry forces everyone to slow down and merge at shallow angles instead, which is why even roundabouts that still produce fender-benders rarely produce the severe crashes a signalized intersection can.
Multi-lane roundabouts show smaller initial safety gains than single-lane ones, since choosing the right lane and watching for vehicles in the adjacent lane takes more judgment — but IIHS research found crash rates at multi-lane roundabouts keep improving as drivers in the area get more familiar with them.
