Colorado Driving Theory Test Practice

Practice questions covering Colorado-specific facts as well as general driving-theory knowledge, plus the official Colorado Department of Revenue, Division of Motor Vehicles (Colorado DMV) handbook where relevant. The real Colorado DMV knowledge exam has 25 questions, and you'll need 80% correct to pass.

Colorado lets nearly any first-time applicant take the permit knowledge test entirely online through its webcam-proctored @HOME platform, with the first attempt free of state fees and no in-person visit required until it's time to pick up the permit.

How these tools help you get licensed

Each one does a different job. Used in roughly this order, they take you from not knowing the material to walking into the Colorado DMV office ready:

  1. Start with the Practice Test — untimed, with an explanation after every question, so you're actually learning the material, not just guessing at it.
  2. Skim the Cheat Sheet for the condensed version: test-day logistics plus the Colorado-specific rules you're most likely to be asked about.
  3. When the Practice Test shows you a weak topic, drill it specifically under Questions by Topic instead of hoping it comes up again in a random mix.
  4. Want the source material instead of just practice questions? The Handbook Guide maps the official manual chapter by chapter, so you know exactly where to look.
  5. Check the FAQ for the specific questions Colorado test-takers ask most — the stuff that doesn't fit neatly into a quiz question.
  6. Read the Guides for the Colorado-specific rules the test assumes you already know — permit validity, GDL restrictions, what to bring — but doesn't spell out.
  7. Once you're consistently scoring well, switch to the timed Mock Exam to confirm you can perform under the same pressure as the real thing.
  8. When you're ready, use Resources to get to the official Colorado DMV site and book your actual test.

Your path to a Colorado driver's license

  1. Pass the 25-question Driving Knowledge Test -- most first-timers do this from home through the DMV's webcam-proctored @HOME app for about $6.50, though an in-person test at a state office works too. Then visit a driver license office with proof of identity, your Social Security number, two proofs of a Colorado address, and (if you're under 18) a notarized Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship signed by a parent or guardian, and pay the $19 fee for your instruction permit.
  2. Log driving time under the permit for a full year: 50 supervised hours minimum, with at least 10 of them after dark. If you're applying before turning 16 and a half, you'll also need 6 hours with a certified driving instructor -- or a parent-supervised substitute if no nearby school has openings.
  3. Schedule and pass the driving skills test. Colorado doesn't currently offer this at its own driver license offices -- it's handled almost entirely by certified commercial driving schools, with a handful of counties running their own -- so check availability early rather than waiting until your 12-month mark.
  4. Drive under first-year limits once your license is issued: no passengers under 21 for the first six months unless a licensed adult 21 or older rides along, and no driving alone between midnight and 5 a.m. except for a documented school or work commute, a medical emergency, or if you're legally emancipated.
  5. Ease into full privileges in stages -- one under-21 passenger becomes allowed after six months, and by your first licensing anniversary you can carry as many passengers as you have seat belts, with the overnight curfew behind you.

What makes Colorado different

Every state's licensing process has its own quirks. Here's what's genuinely different about Colorado compared to most other states:

Ready to test?

Colorado DMV requires 80% correct to pass. A good rule of thumb: once you're consistently scoring comfortably above that — 90% or better across several practice rounds in a row, not just one lucky attempt — you're in a good position to schedule your real test. If you're not there yet, work through the cheat sheet and retry the topics you keep missing.
