Georgia Driving Theory Test Practice
Practice questions covering Georgia-specific facts as well as general driving-theory knowledge, plus the official Georgia Department of Driver Services (Georgia DDS) handbook where relevant. The real Georgia DDS knowledge exam has 40 questions, and you'll need 75% correct to pass.
Georgia's DDS actually splits this exam into two separately-scored 20-question sections — Road Rules and Road Signs — and requires 75% on each rather than one combined score.
How these tools help you get licensed
Each one does a different job. Used in roughly this order, they take you from not knowing the material to walking into the Georgia DDS office ready:
- Start with the Practice Test — untimed, with an explanation after every question, so you're actually learning the material, not just guessing at it.
- Skim the Cheat Sheet for the condensed version: test-day logistics plus the Georgia-specific rules you're most likely to be asked about.
- When the Practice Test shows you a weak topic, drill it specifically under Questions by Topic instead of hoping it comes up again in a random mix.
- Want the source material instead of just practice questions? The Handbook Guide maps the official manual chapter by chapter, so you know exactly where to look.
- Check the FAQ for the specific questions Georgia test-takers ask most — the stuff that doesn't fit neatly into a quiz question.
- Read the Guides for the Georgia-specific rules the test assumes you already know — permit validity, GDL restrictions, what to bring — but doesn't spell out.
- Once you're consistently scoring well, switch to the timed Mock Exam to confirm you can perform under the same pressure as the real thing.
- When you're ready, use Resources to get to the official Georgia DDS site and book your actual test.
Your path to a Georgia driver's license
- Apply for your Class C Instructional Permit (CP) at 15 — it's valid for up to 2 years.
- Complete driver education (30 hours classroom, 6 on-road) and log 40 hours of supervised driving, including 6 at night.
- Hold your CP for one year and one day, then pass Georgia's two-part knowledge exam — separately-scored Road Signs and Road Rules sections, 15/20 required on each — plus the road test.
- Get your Class D Provisional License at 16 — no driving between midnight and 5 a.m., no exceptions, and only immediate family as passengers for your first 6 months.
- After a full year on your provisional license, you can carry up to 3 non-family passengers under 21.
- At 18, exchange your Class D for a full Class C license — $32, covering 8 years — and the provisional restrictions end.
What makes Georgia different
Every state's licensing process has its own quirks. Here's what's genuinely different about Georgia compared to most other states:
- Georgia's knowledge exam isn't one 40-question test — it's two separately-scored 20-question sections, Road Signs and Road Rules, and you need 15/20 (75%) on each one individually, not just a combined average.
- The midnight-to-5-a.m. curfew for Class D Provisional License holders has no listed exceptions for work, school, or emergencies — unlike most states' GDL curfews, which usually carve those out.
- Your passenger limit phases in over two separate stages: immediate family only for your first 6 months, then up to 3 non-family passengers under 21 once you've completed a full year on your provisional license.
- Georgia's "Super Speeder" law tacks on an extra $200 state fee, on top of the normal ticket, for anyone convicted of driving 75+ mph on a two-lane road or 85+ mph on any road.
Ready to test?
Georgia DDS requires 75% correct to pass. A good rule of thumb: once you're consistently scoring comfortably above that — 90% or better across several practice rounds in a row, not just one lucky attempt — you're in a good position to schedule your real test. If you're not there yet, work through the cheat sheet and retry the topics you keep missing.
