Idaho Driving Theory Test Practice
Practice questions covering Idaho-specific facts as well as general driving-theory knowledge, plus the official Idaho Transportation Department (Idaho ITD) handbook where relevant. The real Idaho ITD knowledge exam has 40 questions, and you'll need 85% correct to pass.
Idaho's permit knowledge test is computer-adaptive, ending the moment you reach 34 correct answers, and its motorcycle helmet law applies only to riders under 18, with no requirement at all for adults.
How these tools help you get licensed
Each one does a different job. Used in roughly this order, they take you from not knowing the material to walking into the Idaho ITD office ready:
- Start with the Practice Test — untimed, with an explanation after every question, so you're actually learning the material, not just guessing at it.
- Skim the Cheat Sheet for the condensed version: test-day logistics plus the Idaho-specific rules you're most likely to be asked about.
- When the Practice Test shows you a weak topic, drill it specifically under Questions by Topic instead of hoping it comes up again in a random mix.
- Want the source material instead of just practice questions? The Handbook Guide maps the official manual chapter by chapter, so you know exactly where to look.
- Check the FAQ for the specific questions Idaho test-takers ask most — the stuff that doesn't fit neatly into a quiz question.
- Read the Guides for the Idaho-specific rules the test assumes you already know — permit validity, GDL restrictions, what to bring — but doesn't spell out.
- Once you're consistently scoring well, switch to the timed Mock Exam to confirm you can perform under the same pressure as the real thing.
- When you're ready, use Resources to get to the official Idaho ITD site and book your actual test.
Your path to a Idaho driver's license
- Enroll in Driver Training at 14 1/2 -- 30 hours classroom, 6 hours observing, and 6 hours behind the wheel -- required for anyone under 17.
- Begin the GDL supervised instruction period once training is complete: 6 violation-free months with a licensed adult 21+ in the front seat, logging 50 hours of practice driving including 10 at night.
- Pass a knowledge test (40 questions, computer-adaptive, stops at 34 correct) and a skills test (12 or fewer errors) to get licensed.
- Live within real post-license limits: daylight-only driving under 16 without an adult present, and just one non-family passenger under 17 during your first 6 months licensed.
- Get a Class D Instruction Permit instead at 17+ if you skipped the youth track -- one year, accompanied by any licensed adult 18+, no driver training required.
What makes Idaho different
Every state's licensing process has its own quirks. Here's what's genuinely different about Idaho compared to most other states:
- A single traffic conviction during Idaho's supervised instruction period doesn't just add a penalty -- it cancels the permit outright and restarts the entire 6-month violation-free clock from zero.
- Idaho's knowledge test is computer-adaptive, ending the moment you reach 34 correct answers rather than always running the full 40 questions.
- Idaho's motorcycle helmet law applies only to riders under 18 -- adult motorcyclists face no helmet requirement at all under state law.
- Idaho allows speeds up to 80 mph on some interstates where posted, among the highest limits in the country.
- A first failed BAC test brings a 90-day suspension with 30 days of absolutely no driving, followed by a mandatory full year with an ignition interlock device once the suspension ends.
Ready to test?
Idaho ITD requires 85% correct to pass. A good rule of thumb: once you're consistently scoring comfortably above that — 90% or better across several practice rounds in a row, not just one lucky attempt — you're in a good position to schedule your real test. If you're not there yet, work through the cheat sheet and retry the topics you keep missing.
