Virginia Driving Theory Test Practice
Practice questions covering Virginia-specific facts as well as general driving-theory knowledge, plus the official Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (Virginia DMV) handbook where relevant. The real Virginia DMV knowledge exam has 40 questions, and you'll need 85% correct to pass.
Virginia's knowledge exam is really two separately-graded parts: a 10-question road-sign section that demands a perfect score, plus a 30-question general-knowledge section requiring 80% correct.
How these tools help you get licensed
Each one does a different job. Used in roughly this order, they take you from not knowing the material to walking into the Virginia DMV office ready:
- Start with the Practice Test — untimed, with an explanation after every question, so you're actually learning the material, not just guessing at it.
- Skim the Cheat Sheet for the condensed version: test-day logistics plus the Virginia-specific rules you're most likely to be asked about.
- When the Practice Test shows you a weak topic, drill it specifically under Questions by Topic instead of hoping it comes up again in a random mix.
- Want the source material instead of just practice questions? The Handbook Guide maps the official manual chapter by chapter, so you know exactly where to look.
- Check the FAQ for the specific questions Virginia test-takers ask most — the stuff that doesn't fit neatly into a quiz question.
- Read the Guides for the Virginia-specific rules the test assumes you already know — permit validity, GDL restrictions, what to bring — but doesn't spell out.
- Once you're consistently scoring well, switch to the timed Mock Exam to confirm you can perform under the same pressure as the real thing.
- When you're ready, use Resources to get to the official Virginia DMV site and book your actual test.
Your path to a Virginia driver's license
- Study for the knowledge exam, a two-part test — you need a perfect score on the 10 road-sign questions before you're even allowed to attempt the 30-question general section, where 80% is required.
- Apply for your learner's permit — it's valid for up to 8 years, one of the longest permit terms in the country, so the permit's own expiration is essentially never what's rushing you.
- Practice with a licensed supervisor who's at least 21 (or 18-20 if they're your legal guardian or sibling), seated in the front passenger seat.
- Hold your permit at least 60 days before your first road skills test — or skip that wait entirely by completing a driver education course instead.
- Pass the road skills test in a vehicle that meets Virginia's equipment checklist (valid inspection sticker, working lights, horn, mirrors, and more) to get your license.
What makes Virginia different
Every state's licensing process has its own quirks. Here's what's genuinely different about Virginia compared to most other states:
- Virginia's learner's permit doesn't expire in months the way most states' do — a standard, non-REAL-ID permit is valid for up to 8 years, the same long term as a full license, so the permit's own expiration date essentially never limits your timeline.
- Radar detectors are illegal to even have in use in a vehicle anywhere in Virginia — one of just a handful of states with a blanket statewide ban rather than a limited restriction.
- Drivers must yield to military convoys here and are barred from ever cutting through or joining one — a rule tied to Virginia's large military and National Guard presence that most states' manuals don't mention at all.
- A real, dated rule change takes effect January 1, 2027: first-time applicants 18-20 will need to hold a permit for 90 days AND complete driver education together, while applicants 21+ will need 60 days OR driver education. If you're applying around that date, double-check which version of the rule applies to you.
Ready to test?
Virginia DMV requires 85% correct to pass. A good rule of thumb: once you're consistently scoring comfortably above that — 90% or better across several practice rounds in a row, not just one lucky attempt — you're in a good position to schedule your real test. If you're not there yet, work through the cheat sheet and retry the topics you keep missing.
