Can I take Colorado's permit test online?
Yes -- nearly any first-time applicant can take the entire Driving Knowledge Test through the webcam-proctored @HOME platform, with no office visit required until it's time to pick up the actual permit.
How much does the Colorado @HOME online knowledge test cost?
About $6.50 in vendor and processing fees for a first attempt, with no separate state charge; a second online attempt adds an $11.50 state DMV fee on top of that.
How much is a Colorado instruction permit?
The instruction permit fee is $19.00, current since the DMV's fee schedule update effective June 30, 2025.
How many times can I retake the written test if I fail?
You get up to 3 attempts within 90 days of your original application; if you fail all 3 or let 90 days pass, the application closes and you have to start over.
How long must I hold my instruction permit before getting a license?
Colorado minors must hold the permit a full 12 months and log 50 hours of supervised driving, at least 10 of them at night, before applying for a driver license.
Where do I take the driving skills (road) test?
It currently can't be scheduled at a state driver license office -- it's primarily given by certified commercial driving schools, though some county-operated offices also offer it.
How soon do new Colorado residents need to get a Colorado license?
Within 30 days of becoming a resident, unless you're active-duty military, a military dependent, or in-state mainly to attend school.
What must accompany a permit application from someone under 18?
A signed Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship (DR2460) from a parent, stepparent, legal guardian, or other responsible adult, signed in front of a driver license office employee or a notary public.
What documents do I need to bring to my permit appointment?
