What to Bring to Your Michigan Permit Test

Last updated 2026-07-29

The core documents

Bring proof of a valid Social Security number (or a letter of ineligibility if you don't have one), proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence, proof of identity, and proof of Michigan residency — at least two documents, such as a utility bill or lease.

All of these need to be original documents — photocopies or faxes aren't accepted, and more than one document may be required to fully satisfy a given category.

Legal presence and identity have to line up

Acceptable proof of citizenship or legal presence includes a certified birth certificate with a raised seal, a valid U.S. passport, a certificate of citizenship or naturalization, a Permanent Resident Card, or an Employment Authorization Card.

The names and dates of birth on your legal presence and identity documents should match. If your current legal name differs from what's on your birth certificate, you'll need legal proof of the name change — an original marriage license, divorce decree, or court order for each time your name changed.

Pre-applying online can speed things up

Your application moves faster if you pre-apply at Michigan.gov/SOS before scheduling your Secretary of State office appointment — worth doing ahead of time rather than starting the paperwork cold at the counter.

The written knowledge test itself is free at any Secretary of State office. Taking it online instead, from home, costs a $6.50 convenience fee — a real tradeoff between cost and convenience worth deciding on ahead of your appointment.

If you're 18 or older and have never been licensed

You apply for a TIP at a Secretary of State office, then take your driving skills test through a driver testing business rather than the state directly. The same identity, citizenship, and residency documents apply — there's no shortcut on paperwork just because you're an adult applicant.

You'll also need at least 30 days of practice driving with a licensed adult logged before you're eligible for that driving skills test, mirroring the practice-time requirement teens face, just with a much lower hour threshold.

Arrive early if you're taking the knowledge test in person

Get to a Secretary of State office at least one hour before it closes if you still need to take the written knowledge test — that buffer is meant to ensure you have enough time to actually complete it before the office shuts down for the day.

Showing up right at closing time risks not being allowed to start the test at all, even if the office is technically still open when you walk in — build in real margin rather than cutting it close.
