What to Bring to Your Georgia Road Test

The core documents
Bring proof of identity, U.S. citizenship or lawful presence, and Georgia residency, your full Social Security number (or proof you're ineligible for one), and — if you're under 18 — proof of school enrollment plus a parent, guardian, or responsible adult to sign in person.
For a minor, the school-enrollment proof and the signing adult aren't independent options — you need both together, not a choice of one or the other, since Georgia treats them as two separate parts of confirming a minor applicant's eligibility.
You have to provide the vehicle yourself
DDS only administers a Class C or D road test in a four-wheel vehicle, and you're responsible for providing it. That vehicle needs a valid registration or license plate — or, if it's on a temporary dealership tag, a bill of sale showing purchase within the last 30 days (7 days if bought from a third party, not a dealer).
This is worth planning around well before your appointment — if you don't personally own a vehicle, you'll need to arrange to borrow one that meets these registration requirements, since DDS doesn't provide a test vehicle the way a driving school's own in-house road test might.
Driver-assistance tech is allowed, but you still have to prove you can drive without it
You can take the skills test in a vehicle equipped with advanced driver assistance systems — but you still have to demonstrate you can operate the vehicle without relying on that technology during the test.
In practice, this often means the examiner will specifically ask you to disable or ignore certain assistance features during parts of the test — relying on automated parking or lane-keeping assistance to compensate for a skill you haven't actually mastered yourself is likely to be caught rather than credited.
What the examiner is actually grading
Beyond general road skills, the road test specifically evaluates:
- Backing up straight and smoothly, turning your head to look behind you, without crossing boundary lines.
- Stopping properly for signs and signals, including remaining stopped for pedestrians in a crosswalk.
- A three-point turn in a narrow space.
- Smooth, correct clutch use if your car has a manual transmission.
- Proper lane position and looking both directions when approaching intersections and corners.
- Yielding right-of-way to pedestrians, other vehicles, and bicyclists already in the intersection.
You also can't carry on a conversation with the examiner during the test — they're busy giving instructions and recording your score.
What happens after you pass
Pass everything and you're issued a temporary license or permit on the spot, with your permanent one mailed to you afterward.
The temporary document you walk out with is fully valid to drive on immediately — you don't need to wait for the permanent card to arrive in the mail before legally getting behind the wheel under your new credential.
