What Happens If You Fail Rhode Island's DMV Test?
Last updated 2026-08-07
A failed road test means a mandatory 30-day wait
If you fail your road test, you must call or visit a DMV office to schedule another appointment -- you will not be allowed to retake the test immediately. You must wait at least 30 days before your next appointment.
If an appointment isn't available before your permit expires, you may need to take the written test again and obtain a new permit entirely -- and you're not eligible for the written test until your current permit has actually expired.
Certain mistakes cause immediate failure
Reasons for immediate road-test failure include leaving the designated roadway (driving on the sidewalk, leaving the lane of travel, driving in a safety zone), any moving violation, lack of cooperation with the examiner, or a collision or contact with any other object.
Because these cause immediate failure regardless of how well the rest of the test goes, treat them as absolute red lines rather than mistakes you can recover from during the same test.
Your vehicle can cause a failure before you even start driving
A Driving Test Examiner conducts a vehicle safety inspection before the exam begins, checking brake lights, directional lights, headlights, hazard lights, tires, and window tint. If your vehicle is deemed unsafe, you'll be required to reschedule.
You may not leave the road test area to secure missing documentation or fix a vehicle issue and return the same day -- so double-check every requirement (registration, insurance card, inspection sticker) the night before your appointment.
What the road test actually evaluates
The test includes pre-driving procedures, driving in traffic, parking, making proper turns, and other common driving experiences.
If you're not confident about a retest, focus on the specific skill area that caused your failure rather than restudying everything -- the examiner's feedback on why you failed is the most direct guide for what to practice before your next attempt.
Language support is available for the written test
The computerized written test is available in other languages upon request, and a translated vocabulary list (Spanish and Portuguese) of common road-test words and instructions is available on the DMV website and at DMV locations, even though the driving exam instructions themselves are given in English.
If language could be a barrier during your road test specifically, review that vocabulary list beforehand so unfamiliar English instructions during the exam don't cost you points unrelated to your actual driving skill.
