How Long Does a Maine Learner's Permit Last?
Last updated 2026-08-07
Generally valid for 2 years
A Maine learner's permit is generally valid for 2 years from the date it's issued. During that window, you may drive only when accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 20 years old and has held a valid license for at least 2 years.
That accompanying driver must also be licensed to operate the class of vehicle you're driving -- someone with only a standard Class C license, for instance, can't supervise you in a vehicle that requires a different class.
The 6-month hold before you can even apply for a road test
If you're under 21, you can't apply for a road test until you've held your permit for 6 months. This is a firm floor, not a suggestion -- even if you feel ready sooner, the road test won't be scheduled until that 6-month mark passes.
Alongside the 6-month hold, you also need at least 70 hours of logged driving (including 10 at night), certified by a parent, stepparent, guardian, or spouse -- both requirements have to be satisfied together, not just one or the other.
What happens if your permit is close to expiring
Because the permit is only valid for about 2 years, it's worth tracking your issue date against your 6-month eligibility and 70-hour logging progress so you're not racing an expiration date on top of everything else.
If your permit does lapse before you're ready for the road test, you'd need to go through the application process again -- so treat the 2-year window as a real deadline, not just a formality.
Driver education is a separate requirement, not part of the permit's timeline
If you're under 18, you must complete an approved driver education course -- this is required to get the permit in the first place if you're under 18, separate from the permit's own validity period or the 6-month/70-hour road test requirements.
Completing driver's ed early doesn't shorten the 6-month hold or the 70-hour logging requirement -- all three requirements (driver's ed, the hold period, and the logged hours) run on their own separate tracks.
What your permit does not allow
A learner's permit never allows unsupervised driving, at any point during its 2-year validity -- the requirement for a licensed 20+/2-year driver in the seat next to you applies for the entire time you hold a permit, right up until you pass your road test.
Don't assume any milestone (the 6-month mark, a certain number of logged hours) changes this -- supervision is required continuously until you're actually issued a license.
