What to Bring to Your Maine Permit Test Appointment

Two forms of identification, every time
Maine requires two forms of identification to apply for a permit or license. One commonly used combination is a birth certificate and a Social Security card, though other document combinations may work too.
Confirm exactly which documents you're bringing satisfy the requirement before your appointment, since a mismatched or incomplete set of documents is an easy reason to lose a testing slot.
A birth certificate or passport, if you're 22 or younger
Applicants up to and including age 22 must specifically provide a birth certificate or passport to determine their date of birth. If you're bringing a photocopy of a birth certificate, it must have an embossed seal or stamp from the issuing agency -- notarized copies aren't accepted.
This age-22 cutoff is worth knowing if you're a slightly older first-time applicant -- it's not just a rule for teenagers getting their very first permit.
Parental or guardian consent, if you're under 18
A minor's application for an operator's license or learner's permit must be signed by a parent or legal guardian with custody, or by the minor's spouse if that spouse is 18 or older.
Coordinate this signature in advance -- the person who signs is also the one who can later request that the license or permit be suspended, so it's worth understanding who's taking on that role before the appointment.
Bring your own vehicle for the road test
Drivers must furnish their own vehicle for the road test, properly registered (bring the registration) and inspected. You must also be accompanied by a licensed operator who holds a valid driver's license.
Confirm your vehicle's registration and inspection sticker are current well before your scheduled appointment -- a lapsed inspection is a preventable reason to lose your test slot.
Know the road test scheduling process
When you're ready for your road test, you mail the road test request form or driving log to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles' main office in Augusta, and you'll then be scheduled at the testing location nearest your residence.
Bring your learner's permit and your appointment notice with you to the scheduled road test -- and if the day has snow or icy conditions, you can elect to be rescheduled at no fee.
