What Happens If You Fail Maine's Written or Road Test?

Last updated 2026-08-07

The manual doesn't state a specific retry limit

Unlike some states that print an exact number of allowed attempts or a mandatory waiting period between tries, Maine's manual doesn't specify either for the written test or the road test.

Since retest scheduling runs through the same process as your original appointment (mailing a request to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles' Augusta office), confirm current scheduling expectations with your local office if you're not confident about passing on your next attempt.

What the written test actually measures

The written test measures your understanding of traffic laws, regulations, driving skills, and vehicle handling, as well as your ability to identify and understand highway signs -- with special emphasis on Maine's drinking and driving laws specifically.

If you're not confident about a retest, revisit Section 3 (alcohol and drugs) and Section 1 (licensing) closely -- these carry the densest concentration of Maine-specific numbers worth double-checking before you try again.

The road test is graded on vehicle control and reaction to traffic

During the road test, an Examiner assesses your ability to maintain control of the vehicle -- driving forward or backward, turning left or right, or driving straight ahead -- along with how well you observe and react to other road users, pedestrians, traffic signs, signals, and conditions.

You won't be asked to do anything extraordinary or illegal during the test, so if a retest is needed, focus on fundamentals rather than assuming you need to prepare for unusual scenarios.

A free reschedule exists specifically for winter weather

If your road test is scheduled on a day experiencing snow and/or icy conditions, you can elect to be rescheduled at no fee rather than attempting the test (or having it cancelled) under unsafe conditions.

This isn't the same as a failed-test retest -- it's a proactive rescheduling option, so use it if weather looks questionable on your test day rather than risking a genuine fail under difficult conditions.

The road test won't happen until everything else is done

The manual is explicit that the road test will not be given until all other tests -- vision and written -- have been successfully completed first.

This means a failed vision or written test blocks your road test entirely, so make sure you've genuinely passed those first two before assuming a road test appointment is the next step.
