How Long Does a Wyoming Permit Last?

Last updated 2026-08-07

The permit itself isn't the real clock -- age eligibility is

Wyoming's manual doesn't frame the Instruction Permit around a single, fixed expiration date the way some states do. Instead, what actually governs how long a family spends on the permit is the age-based eligibility for the next stage: an Intermediate license at 16, or full privileges at 17 (or 16 and a half with the right prerequisites).

In practice, this means a 15-year-old who gets an Instruction Permit has roughly a year of runway before the Intermediate license becomes available, and the permit stage simply continues until the applicant is ready and eligible to move up.

The extreme-inconvenience track runs on its own separate, shorter clock

For 14- and 15-year-olds pursuing Wyoming's extreme-inconvenience restricted license, a matching restricted instruction permit is available -- but it's valid for only 60 days, a genuinely short window compared to the standard permit track.

This shorter permit reflects the narrower purpose of the extreme-inconvenience program itself: it exists for households where a teen genuinely needs to drive due to distance from school or work, not as a general early-start option, so the timeline is compressed accordingly.

A driver-education certification card expires after two years

If a family is using a driver-education course to waive the skills test, the certification card proving completion (30 hours classroom, 6 hours behind-the-wheel) is only honored for up to two years after it's issued.

This is worth tracking separately from the permit itself -- a family that completes driver education early but delays testing for more than two years could find the waiver no longer valid, even if the Instruction Permit itself is still active.

Supervision is required for the entire permit period, with no exceptions

Throughout the Instruction Permit stage, the driver must be accompanied by someone at least 18 years old who holds a valid license for the type of vehicle being driven, seated in the front passenger seat.

There's no unsupervised solo-driving allowance built into Wyoming's Instruction Permit -- regardless of how long the permit stage lasts for a given family, supervision applies to every single drive during it.

Renewal timing changes once a full license is reached

Once a driver has moved past the permit and Intermediate stages into a full license, Wyoming's renewal rules shift: licensees over 21 can renew up to 120 days before expiration, while those under 21 get a shorter 90-day window.

An under-21 licensee who specifically wants an adult-type license (removing any remaining restrictions) can only renew within 30 days of their 21st birthday -- a narrower window worth planning around if that's the goal.
