IT'S THE THREE SECOND RULE! YOU COUNT ONE-THOUSAND-ONE, ONE-THOUSAND-TWO, AND ONE-THOUSAND-THREE AND THEN PROCEED. THAT'S THE DISTANCE.

3 seconds as a normal following distance, 4 seconds on highway because cars travel at faster speeds.

My 2013 manual says give 4 second rule when merging since that gives you plus other car 2 seconds, but to go back to 3 second rule when its safe. This question is confusing
