Arkansas Driver Handbook Guide

The official Arkansas driver's handbook covers a lot of ground — not all of it tested. This page maps its actual chapter structure, straight from the handbook's own table of contents, so you know what's in there before deciding whether to read the whole thing or lean on our cheat sheet instead. Chapters at a glance

  1. Introduction | The Driver's License — The chapter every new applicant needs first, even though it comes before the numbered chapters: the accepted-identification list, Arkansas's full graduated-license lineup (Instruction Permit, Learner's License, Intermediate License, Class D, Class M, Class MD, Motorized Bicycle Certificate), vision requirements, and countries exempt from testing.
  2. Chapter 1 | Arkansas Law — The seat belt law, Child Passenger Protection Act, secondhand-smoke-around-children law, littering penalties, unattended children/pets, the Move Over Law, school bus stop rules (including Isaac's Law), and how to interact with a law enforcement officer at a stop.
  3. Chapter 2 | Arkansas Rules and Regulations — Construction/work zone safety, traffic control signals and signs, the Right on Red rule, railroad crossing signs and safety, and the full catalog of regulation, warning, and roadway signs.
  4. Chapter 3 | General Driving — Lane types and pavement markings, passing and turning technique, right-of-way at intersections and stop signs, roundabout navigation, and parking rules including restricted zones.
  5. Chapter 4 | Safe Driving — Vehicle operation basics (seat belt, acceleration, steering, stopping), Arkansas's distracted driving law, staying alert, and changing lanes safely (blind spots, backing).
  6. Chapter 5 | See and Be Seen — The longest chapter -- headlights, horns, emergency flashers, signaling, adjusting speed to conditions, merging and exiting traffic, following distance, and the safety cushion concept across many specific traffic situations.
  7. Chapter 6 | Tractor Trailer Rigs — Braking, turning, and maneuverability differences for large trucks, plus the tractor-trailer "No-Zone" blind spots -- relevant for sharing the road, not for driving one.
  8. Chapter 7 | Sharing the Road with Bicycles and Motorcycles — Safety tips for drivers around bicyclists and motorcyclists, lane positioning, bicycle hand signals, and the space/following-distance a motorcyclist needs.
  9. Chapter 8 | Driving Fitness — Vision, hearing, fatigue, and health conditions that affect driving, plus Arkansas's alcohol law (including the crash/serious-offense 0.04% DWI threshold and the under-21 0.02% threshold) and other drugs' effects on driving.
  10. Chapter 9 | Emergencies — Vehicle emergencies (brake failure, blowouts, engine failure), avoiding collisions, skid recovery, and what to do at a traffic crash -- including the $1,000 property-damage/injury police-notification threshold.
  11. Chapter 10 | Skills Test Guidelines — Pre-test vehicle inspection (seats, mirrors, brakes, lights, tires, steering) -- practical preparation for the driving skills test itself, not knowledge-test content.

What's actually tested

The Arkansas knowledge exam draws most heavily from the Introduction (graduated licenses, vision requirements), Chapter 1 (seat belts, child restraints, Move Over Law, school bus law), Chapter 2 (signs and signals), Chapter 3 (right-of-way), and Chapter 8 (alcohol and the law). This site's cheat-sheet topics -- Minor & Provisional Licensing, Licensing Procedure & Documents, DUI Laws & Penalties, Rules of the Road, Crashes & Insurance, and Child Passenger Safety -- map directly onto that content.

Chapter 6 (Tractor Trailer Rigs) and Chapter 10 (Skills Test Guidelines) are real study guide content but are either narrow (relevant mainly to sharing the road with trucks, not driving one) or purely preparatory for the driving portion of testing, not the knowledge exam itself.

Want to drill exactly those topics? Try the Arkansas practice test or the condensed cheat sheet.
