Hawaii Driver Handbook Guide
The official Hawaii driver's handbook covers a lot of ground — not all of it tested. This page maps its actual chapter structure, straight from the handbook's own table of contents, so you know what's in there before deciding whether to read the whole thing or lean on our cheat sheet instead. Chapters at a glance
- Chapter I | Licensing of Drivers — The core GDL chapter: Instruction Permit and provisional license requirements, minor-driving restrictions, license classes, who cannot be licensed, and county-by-county application procedure -- the densest chapter for this site's Minor & Provisional Licensing and Licensing Procedure clusters.
- Chapter II | Vehicle Equipment and Inspection — Required equipment and the state's periodic safety inspection program -- practical vehicle-maintenance content without much state-specific numeric testable detail.
- Chapter III | Vehicle Registration — Registration and titling procedure, mostly logistics rather than knowledge-test material.
- Chapter IV | The Driver — Driver fitness, vision, and general responsibility content.
- Chapter V | Traffic Laws, Ordinances, Rules and Regulations — General traffic law, including speed limits, school bus stops, parking rules, and open-container/alcohol-possession law -- this site's primary source for the Rules of the Road cluster.
- Chapter VI | Signals, Signs and Lane Markings — Sign and signal recognition, largely consistent with national conventions rather than Hawaii-specific rules.
- Chapter VII | Crash Procedures — What to do after a crash, including the $3,000 property-damage reporting threshold -- this site's source for the Motor Vehicle Safety Responsibility Law facts.
- Chapter VIII | No Fault Insurance -- Financial Responsibility — Hawaii's no-fault insurance system, its minimum coverage amounts, SR-22 requirements, and when a driver can sue for bodily injury -- this site's source for the Crashes, Insurance & License Actions cluster.
- Chapter IX | Alcohol and Other Drugs — BAC impairment tiers, Zero Tolerance, Administrative License Revocation, and refusal penalties -- this site's source for the DUI & Alcohol Laws cluster.
- Chapter X | Safe Driving Techniques — Seat belts, child restraints, and airbags -- this site's source for the seat-belt-survival-statistics and child-restraint facts.
- Chapter XI | Trucks, Buses and Motorcycles — Commercial and motorcycle-specific content, largely out of scope for this site's passenger-vehicle knowledge test focus.
- Chapter XII | Pedestrian Safety — Pedestrian right-of-way and safety guidance.
- Chapter XIII | Bicycle Safety — Bicycle right-of-way and the 3-foot passing-clearance rule -- this site's source for the bicycle-clearance fact.
What's actually tested
The Hawaii knowledge test draws most heavily from Chapter I (GDL licensing), Chapter V (traffic laws, speed limits, school bus and alcohol-possession rules), Chapter VIII (no-fault insurance), Chapter IX (alcohol and DUI law), and Chapter X (seat belts and child restraints) -- this site's cheat sheet and question bank focus on exactly that material.
Chapters II, III, IV, VI, XI, XII, and XIII cover real, useful vehicle-maintenance, registration, and sign/signal content but track closely to national conventions or logistics rather than Hawaii-specific rules, so they aren't a meaningful source of Hawaii-specific exam questions.
