Indiana Driving Theory Test FAQ
The questions learners ask most before and around test day — process and logistics, not rules. Have a more general question that isn't specific to Indiana? Check the general FAQ instead.
Looking for the rules likely to be on the actual test?Read the Indiana cheat sheet →How many questions are on the Indiana BMV knowledge exam?
50 questions total, split into two separately-scored parts: 16 on road signs and 34 on traffic laws and safe driving.
What score do I need to pass?
At least 80% correct -- and you need 80% on both the sign section and the traffic-law section separately, not just 80% overall.
How much does an Indiana learner's permit and license cost?
The learner's permit itself is $9; a driver's license is $17.50 if you're under 75. The knowledge exam, vision screening, and driving skills exam are all free.
What documents do I need to bring to the BMV?
Proof of identity, proof of lawful status, your full Social Security number, and two documents proving Indiana residency -- plus parent/guardian consent and a financial-liability co-signer if you're under 18.
Can I retake the exam if I fail?
Yes -- you can retake a failed knowledge exam the next business day, with no cap on attempts. A failed driving skills exam has a 7-day wait (two months after a third failure on a permit).
How old do I have to be to get an Indiana learner's permit?
16, or 15 if you're enrolled in a BMV-licensed driver education program and can show a Certificate of Driver Education Enrollment.
How long is Indiana's probationary license period?
Until your 21st birthday, not 18 like most states -- your first license stays probationary until then, and you can't even renew it until you're 21 years and one day old.
How many hours of supervised driving do I need to log?
At least 50 hours, with at least 10 of them at night, logged on State Form 54706 -- required for every applicant, whether under 18 or 18 and older.
Can I do any part of the licensing process online?
Not the first application -- that always requires an in-person BMV branch visit. myBMV.com only handles renewals, replacements, and amendments, and only every other cycle.
Is usdriving.net's Indiana practice test actually free?
Yes -- every practice question, the cheat sheet, and this FAQ are free, with no account or sign-up required.
