Just moved to Indiana?

A new Indiana resident has 60 days to get an Indiana driver's license and 60 days to title/register a vehicle already owned before moving -- missing the title deadline brings a $30 administrative penalty per vehicle. See the official new-resident and vehicle registration links above for the full requirements.

Minimum car insurance in Indiana

Indiana requires 25/50/25 liability coverage ($25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, $25,000 property damage), and state law requires every policy to also include uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage unless the policyholder declines it in writing. You'll need proof of coverage to register a vehicle, and again if you're ever stopped or in a crash — carrying only the state minimum is legal, but it may not cover the full cost of a serious accident you cause.

Renewing your license

A standard Indiana driver's license is valid six years (three years for ages 75-84, two years at 85+) and can only be renewed online every other cycle -- eligibility also requires having renewed in person last time, fewer than six active points, and no name or address change since.

Do you need a REAL ID?

Since May 7, 2025, the TSA has required a REAL ID-compliant license or ID — marked with a star in the upper right corner — or a valid passport to fly domestically or enter certain federal buildings. A standard license still works for driving; REAL ID only matters for federal ID purposes. Getting one for the first time requires an in-person visit even in states that otherwise support fully online renewal, since it's a federal identity requirement, not just a state license update. See how to apply in Indiana above for the exact documents you'll need.
