Kansas Driver Handbook Guide
The official Kansas driver's handbook covers a lot of ground — not all of it tested. This page maps its actual chapter structure, straight from the handbook's own table of contents, so you know what's in there before deciding whether to read the whole thing or lean on our cheat sheet instead. Chapters at a glance
- Front Matter | Required Documents, Real ID, and Age Requirements — Lists the documents needed at a license office, explains Kansas's Real ID option, and lays out the age minimums for every license, permit, and Farm Permit type -- worth reading before Section 1's fuller explanation, since it's the fastest reference back to these numbers.
- SECTION 1 | The Driver's License — The core GDL chapter -- covers the Farm Permit, Instruction Permit, Restricted License (with separate 15- and 16-year-old paths), and Unrestricted License, plus renewal rules, unsuccessful-exam policy, and the full lists of suspension- and revocation-triggering offenses.
- SECTION 2 | State/Provincial/Territory Laws and Rules of the Road — Kansas's own codified rules: speed limits, seatbelt and child-restraint law, signaling distance, passing and U-turn restrictions, stopping requirements, right-of-way, parking, and the cell phone law -- the single densest source of state-specific exam material in the handbook.
- SECTION 3 | Be in Shape to Drive — Vision, hearing, fatigue, distraction, aggressive driving, and alcohol/drug impairment -- includes Kansas's Zero Tolerance under-21 BAC threshold and the state's own first-offense DUI penalties, which are the only state-specific facts in an otherwise mostly generic chapter.
- SECTION 4 | Before You Drive — Seat and mirror adjustment, seatbelt and airbag mechanics, and child passenger safety -- includes the under-14 rear-seat requirement, a broader rule than the age-based car-seat law in Section 2.
- SECTION 5 | Basic Driving — Starting, accelerating, stopping, steering, and backing -- fundamentals-level content with no Kansas-specific numbers to test.
- SECTION 6 | Rules of the Road — Traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings, plus Kansas's own school-bus stop law (including its multi-lane and center-turn-lane exceptions) and the detailed parking-prohibition list.
- SECTION 7 | Safe Driving Tips — Visual search, speed management, and space management -- generally applicable defensive-driving guidance, though it includes the specific Kansas headlights-with-wipers requirement.
- SECTION 8 | Avoiding Collisions and Emergency Situations — Collision avoidance, breakdowns, and vision limitations -- generic emergency-response content not tied to Kansas-specific statutes.
- SECTION 9 | Sharing the Road — Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcycles/mopeds, emergency vehicles, and commercial vehicles -- includes Kansas's statutory definition of a moped and the move-over law for stopped emergency vehicles.
- SECTION 10 | Special Driving Situations — Rural roads, night driving, adverse weather, and animal encounters -- broadly applicable driving guidance with no Kansas-specific figures.
- SECTION 11 | How to Prepare for Your Driver License — Explains the knowledge test format (25 questions, 80% to pass), the pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control test, and road test -- the authoritative source for this site's exam-format facts.
- SECTION 12 | Optional Information — Trip planning and severe-weather driving (winter conditions, heat, tornadoes, lightning, floods) -- supplementary safety material, not exam-tested.
What's actually tested
The Kansas knowledge exam draws almost entirely from Sections 1 and 2 -- the GDL license/permit ladder and Kansas's own codified traffic laws (speed limits, seatbelts, child restraints, signaling, passing, parking, cell phones) -- with Section 3's alcohol-law specifics and Section 6's school-bus and parking rules rounding out the state-specific material this site's cheat sheet and question bank focus on.
Sections 5, 7, 8, 10, and 12 cover real, useful driving skills (basic vehicle control, defensive driving, emergency handling, severe-weather driving) but contain almost no Kansas-specific facts or numbers, so they aren't a meaningful source of exam questions.
