Kentucky Driver Handbook Guide
The official Kentucky driver's handbook covers a lot of ground — not all of it tested. This page maps its actual chapter structure, straight from the handbook's own table of contents, so you know what's in there before deciding whether to read the whole thing or lean on our cheat sheet instead. Chapters at a glance
- Section One | The Driver's License — The single most exam-relevant section -- covers the CDL/Class D/Class E/Class M license classes, who does and doesn't need a Kentucky license, the full three-step Graduated Driver License pipeline (permit, intermediate, full unrestricted) with its 180-day/30-day hold periods, the Practice Driving Log and Driver Education Training requirements, vision and written test standards, out-of-state transfer rules, renewal timing, and the full Kentucky point system.
- Section Two | General Information — Motor vehicle registration (the 15-day window for new residents and vehicle purchases), Kentucky's minimum liability insurance figures, the Medical Review Board's role for drivers with physical or mental impairments, and organ donation registration -- mostly logistics, but the insurance figures are directly exam-testable.
- Section Three | Be in Shape to Drive — Vision, hearing, fatigue, driver distraction, aggressive driving/road rage, aging drivers, and alcohol/other drugs -- this is also where Kentucky's specific DUI/DUID law lives: the 0.08 (general) and 0.02 (under-21) BAC thresholds, aggravating circumstances like a 0.15+ BAC, implied consent, and first-offense DUI penalties.
- Section Four | Before You Drive — Vehicle inspection, seat adjustment, mirror adjustment, air bags, and ADAS safety features -- mostly universal pre-drive fundamentals, though it's the source of Kentucky's height-based Child Passenger Safety Law and its primary-enforcement seat belt law covering vehicles made after 1981.
- Section Five | Basic Driving — Starting the engine, moving, stopping, steering, and backing up -- introductory vehicle-operation mechanics, universal rather than Kentucky-specific.
- Section Six | Rules of the Road — Right-of-way, traffic control devices, traffic signals, traffic signs, pavement markings, and other lane controls -- almost entirely the same universal sign/signal/marking content this site covers once on the shared /cheat-sheet/ page rather than repeating it per state.
- Section Seven | General Driving — Turning and turnabouts, intersections, roundabouts, school bus rules, parking, lane use, entering/exiting multi-lane highways, and passing -- general driving mechanics, but the source of Kentucky's specific 200-foot no-passing-zone rule and 3-foot bicycle-passing clearance.
- Section Eight | Safe Driving Tips — Visual search, speed management, stopping distance, space management, backing, and communicating -- mostly universal defensive-driving guidance, though it's where Kentucky's default (unposted) speed-limit table and headlight-timing rule live.
- Section Nine | Emergency Situations and Avoiding Crashes — Braking, steering, skid recovery, collision procedures (including the KRS 189.580 move-to-shoulder law and the 10-day/$500 accident-report threshold), and vehicle malfunctions like brake failure and tire blowouts -- general emergency-response guidance with a couple of Kentucky-specific statutory citations.
- Section Ten | Sharing the Road — Pedestrians (including Kentucky's blind-pedestrian right-of-way law), bicyclists, motorcyclists, commercial vehicles, emergency vehicles, police/traffic stops, move-over laws, slow-moving vehicles, and ATVs -- a mix of universal sharing-the-road guidance and several genuinely Kentucky-specific statutes.
- Section Eleven | Special Driving Situations — Night driving, funeral processions, work zones, rural road driving, autocycles, and safe trailering -- this is where Kentucky's night-driving following-distance increments, funeral procession right-of-way law, and unique autocycle license category (no motorcycle endorsement or headgear required) are documented.
- Section Twelve | Test Your Knowledge — An 11-question sample quiz with an answer key -- illustrative practice questions, not a description of the real exam's length or format, which the manual doesn't print.
What's actually tested
The Kentucky knowledge test draws overwhelmingly from Section One (license classes, the three-step GDL pipeline with its hold periods, curfews, and Practice Driving Log, plus renewal and point-system rules) and Section Three (DUI BAC thresholds and penalties). Section Two's insurance figures, Section Four's child-restraint and seat-belt rules, and the passing/speed-limit/night-driving specifics scattered across Sections Seven, Eight, and Eleven round out most of the rest. This site's cheat-sheet topics of 'Minor & Provisional Licensing,' 'Licensing Procedure & Documents,' 'Registration, Insurance & Points,' 'Vehicle Safety & Passenger Restraints,' 'DUI & Alcohol,' 'Rules of the Road,' and 'Sharing the Road' map directly onto those sections, while the universal sign/signal/lane-marking material in Section Six (and the general driving mechanics in Sections Five and Nine) is covered once on this site's shared /cheat-sheet/ page instead of being repeated here.
Section Five's basic vehicle-operation mechanics, Section Nine's skid-recovery and vehicle-malfunction procedures, and Section Eleven's trailering checklist are real manual material but are either general knowledge or road-test skills content rather than the kind of fact a written knowledge test draws from -- this site doesn't build cheat-sheet or question content from them.
