Louisiana Driver Handbook Guide
The official Louisiana driver's handbook covers a lot of ground — not all of it tested. This page maps its actual chapter structure, straight from the handbook's own table of contents, so you know what's in there before deciding whether to read the whole thing or lean on our cheat sheet instead. Chapters at a glance
- Chapter 1 | Getting a Driver's License — The single most exam-relevant chapter -- covers who must have a Louisiana license (and who's exempt, like non-residents on a valid out-of-state license for 90 days), the Class D/E license distinction, ID requirements, the full three-stage R.Y.A.N. Act graduated licensing program with its permit/intermediate/full-license hold periods and curfews, the vision/knowledge/road-skills tests, the driver's license fee table, and the full list of grounds for license revocation or suspension.
- Chapter 2 | Highway Transportation System — General background on how roads, vehicles, and drivers form Louisiana's highway system, plus the number and types of highways in the state -- context-setting material, not itself exam-testable.
- Chapter 3 | Signs, Traffic Lights, and Pavement Markings — Traffic signs, signals, and lane markings -- almost entirely the same universal sign/rule content this site covers once on the shared /cheat-sheet/ page rather than repeating it per state.
- Chapter 4 | Basic Driving and Safety — Seat belt use, pre-drive checks, basic driving habits, steering methods, and how seasonal weather changes affect driving -- mostly universal fundamentals, though it's where Louisiana's Child Passenger Restraint law (R.S. 32:295) and mandatory-seat-belt rules live.
- Chapter 5 | Safe Driving Habits — Defensive driving, aggressive driving, following distances, passing, night driving, and sharing the road with bicycles, motorcycles, and big trucks. Largely general safe-driving guidance, but it's the source of Louisiana's specific 3-foot bicycle-passing law (R.S. 32:76.1) and its distinct 4-second (motorcycle) and 4-5-second (truck) following-distance recommendations.
- Chapter 6 | Traffic Laws and Regulations — A dense, highly exam-relevant chapter covering speed laws, lane changes, stopped school buses, intersections and turning, roundabouts, signaling, right-of-way, the railroad grade crossing stop law (R.S. 32:171), and a long list of miscellaneous Louisiana-specific statutes (headphone restrictions, front-seat occupancy limits, open truck beds, litter law R.S. 30:2531) plus automobile insurance fraud and theft-prevention tips.
- Chapter 7 | Interstate Driving and Rural Roads — Interstate merging and lane discipline, rural-road hazards like farm machinery and animal-drawn vehicles, slow-moving-vehicle triangles, and trip-planning tips -- general safe-driving guidance rather than distinctly Louisiana rules.
- Chapter 8 | Driving Hazards and Emergencies — Distracted driving (including Louisiana's under-17 texting/calling ban), avoiding collisions, protecting yourself in a crash, mechanical emergencies (tire blowouts, brake failure), and driving in adverse weather like flooding -- a mix of general safety content and one genuinely Louisiana-specific statute.
- Chapter 9 | Driving Offenses — Louisiana's alcohol and DUI law in full: BAC limits by driver category, DWI penalty tiers, implied consent and test-refusal suspensions, vehicular homicide and vehicle negligent injury statutes, and the complete list of violations that can suspend or revoke a Louisiana driving privilege.
- Chapter 10 | General Information for Class D "Chauffeur's" License — Commercial-adjacent content for the Class D chauffeur credential -- vehicle size/load limits, statewide speed limits (70 mph, with 75 mph on parts of I-49), following-distance rules for trucks, required equipment, and air brakes. Out of scope for this site's Class E-focused practice test and cheat sheet.
- Chapter 10-A | Trailer Safety — Trailer hookup, weight distribution, and towing safety -- specialized content outside the scope of a standard Class E knowledge test.
- Chapter 11 | Motor Vehicle Registration and Title — Registering new and used vehicles, the 30-day new-resident registration/license window, proof-of-insurance requirements, registration renewals, the motor vehicle inspection sticker, and the vehicle registration fee schedule -- practical logistics rather than knowledge-test content, though it's the source of this site's new-resident guidance.
What's actually tested
The Louisiana knowledge test draws overwhelmingly from Chapter 1 (license classes, the three-stage GDL program with its hold periods and curfews, the knowledge/vision/road-skills tests) and Chapter 9 (BAC limits, DWI penalties, implied consent). Chapter 6's traffic-law grab-bag (railroad crossings, school buses, headphones, litter, unattended vehicles) and Chapter 5's Louisiana-specific bicycle-passing and following-distance figures round out most of the rest. This site's cheat-sheet topics of 'Minor & Provisional Licensing,' 'Licensing Procedure & Documents,' 'Rules of the Road,' 'Sharing the Road,' and 'DUI & Alcohol' map directly onto those chapters, while the universal sign/signal/lane-marking material in Chapter 3 (and the general safe-driving guidance spread across Chapters 4, 5, and 7) is covered once on this site's shared /cheat-sheet/ page instead of being repeated here.
Chapter 2 (highway-system background), Chapter 7's trip-planning tips, Chapter 8's mechanical-emergency procedures, and Chapters 10/10-A (Class D chauffeur and trailer content) are real manual material but are either general knowledge, commercial-license-only, or not the kind of fact a multiple-choice knowledge test draws from -- this site doesn't build cheat-sheet or question content from them.
Want to drill exactly those topics? Try the Louisiana practice test or the condensed cheat sheet.
