Maine Driver Handbook Guide

The official Maine driver's handbook covers a lot of ground — not all of it tested. This page maps its actual chapter structure, straight from the handbook's own table of contents, so you know what's in there before deciding whether to read the whole thing or lean on our cheat sheet instead. Chapters at a glance

  1. Section 1 | Your Driver's License — The core licensing chapter: how to obtain a permit and license, the GDL timeline (270-day post-road-test restrictions, provisional licensing), out-of-state transfers, renewal, and the Maine demerit point system -- the densest chapter for this site's Minor & Provisional Licensing and Licensing Procedure clusters.
  2. Section 2 | State Laws and Rules — Titling, registering, insuring, and inspecting a vehicle -- this site's source for the mandatory-insurance and uninsured-motorist facts in the Crashes, Insurance & License Actions cluster.
  3. Section 3 | Ready to Drive — Vision, fatigue, distraction, and alcohol/drugs -- Maine's detailed OUI penalty structure lives here, this site's primary source for the DUI & Alcohol Laws cluster.
  4. Section 4 | Before You Drive — Seat adjustment, safety belts, air bags, and child passenger safety -- this site's source for the seatbelt and child-restraint facts.
  5. Section 5 | Getting Started — Basic vehicle operation (starting, moving, stopping, steering, backing) -- foundational skills without much state-specific numeric detail.
  6. Section 6 | Rules of the Road — Traffic controls, signals, signs, and pavement markings -- largely consistent with national conventions rather than Maine-specific rules.
  7. Section 7 | General Driving — Turning, intersections, roundabouts, passing, school buses, and parking -- this site's source for the school-bus-stop and parking-distance facts.
  8. Section 8 | Managing Time and Space — Speed management and speed limits -- this site's source for Maine's default speed-limit tiers.
  9. Section 9 | Avoiding Crashes — Emergency maneuvers and vehicle problems -- practical safety content without much state-specific numeric detail.
  10. Section 10 | Sharing the Road — Pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, large vehicles, and move-over laws -- generally applicable sharing-the-road guidance.
  11. Section 11 | Special Driving Challenges — Night driving, work zones, rural roads, hazardous conditions, and wildlife -- practical safety guidance without much state-specific numeric detail.
  12. Section 12 | Test Your Knowledge — A self-review section covering material from earlier chapters -- useful for cross-verifying this site's own fact numbers, but not a separate source of new content.
  13. Appendix A — Road test refusal reasons, road test information and instructions, and residency/lawful presence requirements -- this site's source for the free weather-related rescheduling fact.

What's actually tested

Maine's knowledge test draws most heavily from Section 1 (licensing procedure, GDL restrictions, and the point system), Section 3 (Maine's unusually detailed OUI penalty structure), Section 2 (mandatory insurance), Section 4 (seat belts and child restraints), Section 7 (school bus and parking rules), and Section 8 (speed limits) -- this site's cheat sheet and question bank focus on exactly that material.

Sections 5, 6, 9, 10, and 11 cover real, useful vehicle-operation, sign-recognition, emergency-response, and sharing-the-road skills but track closely to national conventions, so they aren't a meaningful source of Maine-specific exam questions.
