Just moved to Maine?

A new Maine resident must surrender their out-of-state license and apply for a Maine driver's license within 30 days of establishing residency. See the official new-resident and vehicle registration links above for the full requirements.

Minimum car insurance in Maine

Maine requires minimum liability coverage of $50,000 per person / $100,000 per accident for bodily injury and $25,000 for property damage (50/100/25), plus matching uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. You'll need proof of coverage to register a vehicle, and again if you're ever stopped or in a crash — carrying only the state minimum is legal, but it may not cover the full cost of a serious accident you cause.

Renewing your license

A Maine picture license is valid until the holder's sixth birthday following issuance (fourth birthday if 65 or older at issuance); a renewal notice is mailed about 45 days before expiration.

Do you need a REAL ID?

Since May 7, 2025, the TSA has required a REAL ID-compliant license or ID — marked with a star in the upper right corner — or a valid passport to fly domestically or enter certain federal buildings. A standard license still works for driving; REAL ID only matters for federal ID purposes. Getting one for the first time requires an in-person visit even in states that otherwise support fully online renewal, since it's a federal identity requirement, not just a state license update. See how to apply in Maine above for the exact documents you'll need.
