See "Do I need a REAL ID?" below before you start — it's an extra, in-person step beyond a standard license.
Just moved to Massachusetts?
Massachusetts gives new residents no grace period at all -- the RMV's own page states plainly that you must register your vehicle and convert your out-of-state driver's license "as soon as you become a Massachusetts resident," with the law providing no set number of days to do it. See the official new-resident and vehicle registration links above for the full requirements.
Minimum car insurance in Massachusetts
Massachusetts requires four compulsory coverages, not just one liability figure: $25,000/$50,000 in bodily-injury liability, $30,000 in property-damage liability, $25,000/$50,000 in uninsured-motorist coverage, and $8,000 in no-fault Personal Injury Protection (PIP) -- minimums that increased from their prior levels on July 1, 2025. You'll need proof of coverage to register a vehicle, and again if you're ever stopped or in a crash — carrying only the state minimum is legal, but it may not cover the full cost of a serious accident you cause.
Renewing your license
A Massachusetts Class D or M license is valid for 5 years and costs $50 to renew; renewal can be completed fully online up to 2 years after expiration if you already hold a standard or REAL ID credential, though upgrading to REAL ID for the first time still requires an in-person visit to a service center or AAA location to finish.
Do you need a REAL ID?
Since May 7, 2025, the TSA has required a REAL ID-compliant license or ID — marked with a star in the upper right corner — or a valid passport to fly domestically or enter certain federal buildings. A standard license still works for driving; REAL ID only matters for federal ID purposes. Getting one for the first time requires an in-person visit even in states that otherwise support fully online renewal, since it's a federal identity requirement, not just a state license update. See how to apply in Massachusetts above for the exact documents you'll need.
