Mississippi Driver Handbook Guide
The official Mississippi driver's handbook covers a lot of ground — not all of it tested. This page maps its actual chapter structure, straight from the handbook's own table of contents, so you know what's in there before deciding whether to read the whole thing or lean on our cheat sheet instead. Chapters at a glance
- Front Matter | Fees and License Requirements — The full fee table for every license type/term (right on page 6, before the table of contents even starts) plus the base eligibility, exemption, and ineligibility rules -- the fastest reference back to the manual's cost and eligibility numbers.
- Out-of-State Drivers: Moving to Mississippi — The two different new-resident deadlines (60 days for a license, 30 days for a plate/tag), what happens to a lost out-of-state license, and when the Computerized Exam is waived for an incoming driver with a valid license from elsewhere.
- Military Personnel and College Students — Covers non-resident military/college-student driving privileges, the 90-day post-discharge renewal window, and the general six-month advance renewal rule that applies to every Mississippi license, not just military ones.
- Types of Licenses & Permits — Covers the Regular Learner's Permit, Regular Driver's License (Class R), Class D commercial threshold, School Bus license, and Motorcycle Endorsement -- the core GDL and license-class chapter.
- Application Requirements — Proof of residency, proof of identification, signature/notarization rules for minors, the Certification of Attendance for under-18 applicants, and the incoming (2027) Driver's Education requirement.
- The Examination — Explains the three-part original-license requirement (vision, Computerized Exam, 50-hour affidavit) and what the Computerized Exam is designed to test -- the authoritative source for this site's exam-format facts, though it stops short of stating a specific question count.
- Vehicle Equipment — Brakes, horn, lights, muffler, mirrors, wipers, and tires -- genuinely specific numeric standards (brake stopping distances, horn audibility, lighting caps) rather than generic maintenance advice.
- Squatted Vehicle Law — A short but entirely Mississippi-specific chapter defining and banning "squatted" trucks -- not found in most other states' manuals.
- Safe Driving Basics / Before You Drive — Vision, fatigue, and pre-drive setup -- broadly applicable defensive-driving guidance with few state-specific numbers.
- Pavement Markings / Traffic Signs and Signals / Railroad Crossings / Traffic Signal Lights — Standard sign/signal/marking recognition content, largely consistent with national conventions rather than Mississippi-specific rules.
- Rules of the Road & Safe Driving — The single densest chapter for state-specific content: legal speeds, passing, turning, intersections and right-of-way, yielding to school buses and pedestrians, parking, night driving, and seat belts/child restraints.
- Hazardous Conditions & Emergencies / In Case of an Accident — Skid recovery, flooded roads, and breakdown procedure, plus the $500 property-damage threshold that determines whether an accident must be reported.
- Interstate Highway Driving / Sharing the Road with Bicycles — Interstate-specific lane use and large-vehicle/bicycle sharing guidance -- generally applicable safety content.
- Required Vehicle Documentation — Certificate of title, the window tint compliance certificate/decal requirement, and the Safety Responsibility Act's minimum liability insurance amounts.
- Driving Under the Influence & Implied Consent — Mississippi's unusually detailed, tiered DUI and Zero Tolerance penalty tables (fines, jail terms, and suspension lengths by offense number) -- the single richest source of state-specific DUI facts in the manual.
- License Suspension, Revocation, & Reinstatement — The distinct grounds for suspension (no hearing required) versus mandatory one-year revocation, plus the specific reinstatement fee schedule by violation type.
- Littering / Class D License / Appendices — Littering penalties, the commercial Class D threshold, and appendices on organ donation, the Natchez Trace, and sharing the road -- supplementary material with little exam-relevant state-specific content.
What's actually tested
The Mississippi Computerized Exam draws most heavily from the "Types of Licenses & Permits," "Application Requirements," "Rules of the Road & Safe Driving," "Driving Under the Influence & Implied Consent," and "License Suspension, Revocation, & Reinstatement" chapters, plus the Squatted Vehicle Law and vehicle-equipment specifics that are genuinely distinctive to Mississippi -- this site's cheat sheet and question bank focus on exactly that material.
The sign/signal/marking-recognition chapters, hazard/emergency-response guidance, and the appendices cover real, useful material but track closely to national conventions or aren't the kind of fact a multiple-choice question tests, so they aren't a meaningful source of state-specific exam questions.
