New Hampshire Driver Handbook Guide
The official New Hampshire driver's handbook covers a lot of ground — not all of it tested. This page maps its actual chapter structure, straight from the handbook's own table of contents, so you know what's in there before deciding whether to read the whole thing or lean on our cheat sheet instead. Chapters at a glance
- Section 1 | Driving in New Hampshire — The core licensing chapter: no learner's permit system (practice driving instead), driver education requirements for 16-17 year olds, new-resident rules, out-of-state visitor rules, the three required tests, what to bring, and parental consent -- the densest chapter for this site's Minor & Provisional Licensing and Licensing Procedure clusters.
- Section 2 | Driver's License and Non-Driver ID Information — License types (including the Youth Operator license), restrictions, REAL ID, renewal, the Youth Operator 'Under 20' Law, loss of driving privileges, and habitual offenders -- this site's source for demerit points and Habitual Offender facts.
- Section 3 | Dangerous Driving — Vision, fatigue, distraction, aggressive driving, and alcohol/drug impairment -- this site's source for the BAC-impacts-vision-at-.02% fact and the under-21 alcohol rules.
- Section 4 | Before Driving — Vehicle inspection, seat belts, child passenger safety, motorcycle helmet use, air bags, load securing, towing, and snow/ice removal -- this site's source for the seat belt, child restraint, and helmet-law facts.
- Section 5 | Basic Driving — Steering, right-of-way, speed management, signaling, stopping distance, lane changes, passing, and night driving -- this site's source for the speed-limit and signaling-distance facts.
- Section 6 | Rules of the Road — Traffic control devices, signs, and pavement markings -- largely consistent with national conventions rather than New Hampshire-specific numbers.
- Section 7 | General Driving and Parking — Toll roads, turning, intersections, roundabouts, school bus rules, and parking -- this site's source for the school-bus stop-distance fact.
- Section 8 | Driving Safely — Visual search and space management, including the 4-second following-distance guideline -- consistent with the national bank's own following-distance content, so not used as a state-specific override here.
- Section 9 | Accidents and Financial Responsibility — Accident procedures and New Hampshire's distinctive lack of a mandatory insurance law -- this site's primary source for the Crashes, Insurance & License Actions cluster.
- Section 10 | Driving Emergencies — Braking, swerving, skids, and vehicle malfunctions -- general safe-driving guidance without much state-specific numeric detail.
- Section 11 | Sharing the Road — Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcycles, large trucks, emergency vehicles, and work zones -- general sharing-the-road guidance.
- Section 12 | Test Your Knowledge — A fill-in-the-blank self-review worksheet covering numbers and terms from earlier sections -- useful for cross-verifying this site's own fact numbers, but not a separate source of new content.
What's actually tested
New Hampshire's knowledge test draws most heavily from Section 1 (licensing procedure and the practice-driving/Youth Operator system), Section 2 (license types, REAL ID, renewal, and license actions), Section 5 (speed limits and signaling), Section 7 (school bus and parking rules), and Section 9 (New Hampshire's uniquely optional insurance law) -- this site's cheat sheet and question bank focus on exactly that material.
Sections 6, 10, and 11 cover real, useful sign-recognition, emergency-response, and sharing-the-road skills but track closely to national conventions, so they aren't a meaningful source of New Hampshire-specific exam questions.
