What to Bring to Your NJ Permit Test

The core documents
Bring proof of your Social Security number or Taxpayer Identification Number (or an affidavit of ineligibility if you have neither), one proof of your New Jersey residential address, and enough documents to satisfy the 6-Point ID Verification system.
The 6-point system works by assigning different documents different point values — a passport or birth certificate typically counts for more than a Social Security card or school ID, so several lower-value documents can add up to the required 6 points just as validly as one high-value document.
If you're under 18: parent or guardian consent
You'll need a completed parent or guardian consent form. On the Early Bird Road specifically, that consent has to be signed before you can even enroll in the required behind-the-wheel training course — it isn't just paperwork for the permit application itself.
The Young Adult Road (17+) also requires parent or guardian consent if you're under 18 at the time of applying for the Examination Permit — the consent requirement isn't unique to the youngest path.
What's different if you're on the Early Bird Road
Rather than purchasing your own permit, you provide your documents to your approved driving instructor, who purchases the special learner permit on your behalf at an MVC Licensing Center — after you've completed 6 Points of ID Verification, proof of address, and proof of Social Security number.
You'll also need proof of enrollment in an approved behind-the-wheel training course through the NJ Department of Education or a commercial driving school — the permit purchase and the training enrollment are tied together on this path in a way they aren't on the other two.
What's different if you're on the Young Adult or Adult Road
On these paths, you apply directly for an Examination Permit yourself — no instructor purchasing anything, and no mandatory training course enrollment as a prerequisite. You still need to pass the MVC's knowledge and vision tests and pay the required fee.
This is a meaningfully simpler document trail than the Early Bird Road, since there's no training-course paperwork or instructor coordination required before you can even sit for the tests.
Language accommodations are available for the knowledge test
The knowledge test is offered in English, American Sign Language, and 11 other languages. If your language isn't offered, you can request headphones for an oral test, or a state-approved interpreter — but only after first attempting the test in one of the already-offered languages.
Road test appointments — original or retest — can only be scheduled online at njmvc.gov or in person at an MVC Licensing Center; New Jersey doesn't accept phone bookings for the road test specifically.
