Minimum car insurance in New Mexico

New Mexico requires minimum liability coverage of $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $10,000 for property damage (25/50/10), under the Mandatory Financial Responsibility Act. You'll need proof of coverage to register a vehicle, and again if you're ever stopped or in a crash — carrying only the state minimum is legal, but it may not cover the full cost of a serious accident you cause.

Renewing your license

A New Mexico driver's license is valid for either 4 or 8 years, and can be renewed anytime from 90 days before to 30 days after its expiration date.

Do you need a REAL ID?

Since May 7, 2025, the TSA has required a REAL ID-compliant license or ID — marked with a star in the upper right corner — or a valid passport to fly domestically or enter certain federal buildings. A standard license still works for driving; REAL ID only matters for federal ID purposes. Getting one for the first time requires an in-person visit even in states that otherwise support fully online renewal, since it's a federal identity requirement, not just a state license update.
