North Dakota Driver Handbook Guide
The official North Dakota driver's handbook covers a lot of ground — not all of it tested. This page maps its actual chapter structure, straight from the handbook's own table of contents, so you know what's in there before deciding whether to read the whole thing or lean on our cheat sheet instead. Chapters at a glance
- Your Operator's License — The core licensing chapter: residency exemptions, who can't get a license, the Instruction Permit and Restricted Class D license structure (including the age-15 restricted stage unique to this state), document requirements, fees for temporary vehicle registration, license classes, renewals, and duplicate licenses -- this site's primary source for the Minor & Provisional Licensing and Licensing Procedure clusters.
- Signs, Signals, and Road Markings — Sign shapes and colors, traffic signals, pavement markings, and school bus stopping rules -- this site's source for the school-bus fact; otherwise mostly national-convention content.
- Rules of the Road — Right-of-way, passing, U-turns, speed limits (a full numeric table from 20 mph up to 80 mph), and emergency-vehicle stop requirements -- this site's primary source for the Rules of the Road cluster.
- Driving Skills and Emergency Situations — Seat belts, air bags, child restraints, backing, skids, and equipment failure -- source for this site's seat belt and child restraint facts.
- Drinking, Drugs, and Driving — Implied consent, administrative license suspension tables, DUI court-conviction penalties, the 24/7 Sobriety Program, open container law, and minor-in-possession law -- this site's primary source for the DUI & Alcohol Laws cluster, and one of the more detailed penalty structures encountered in this project.
- Pedestrian Traffic and Recreational Vehicles — Pedestrian right-of-way, bicycles, motorized bicycles, and off-highway vehicles -- source for this site's motorized-bicycle fact; motorcycle-specific rules are covered in a separate Motorcycle Manual, not this one.
- Parent/Guardian Driver Coaching Tips — Guidance for parents supervising a teen driver, covering novice-driver crash risk factors -- general safety guidance, not itself a source of testable state-specific facts.
- Supervised Driving Log — A blank log template for tracking the required supervised practice hours -- a practical tool, not additional rule content.
What's actually tested
North Dakota's knowledge test draws most heavily from Your Operator's License (the GDL/permit structure and its distinctive age-15 restricted-license stage), Rules of the Road (the full numeric speed limit table), and Drinking, Drugs, and Driving (the administrative-suspension and point system tables) -- this site's cheat sheet and question bank focus on exactly that material.
This manual explicitly excludes motorcycle-specific content -- it directs motorcycle applicants to a separate Motorcycle Manual -- so this site's facts about North Dakota's motorcycle helmet law (the operator's-age-based passenger rule referenced in this state's stateFact) were independently verified through NDCC 39-10.2-06 rather than sourced from this manual. The manual also doesn't print a license or permit fee schedule beyond the $10 temporary-registration service fee and the $50 restricted-duplicate-license fee.
