- Test length varies: 40 multiple-choice questions, available in ASL and nine other languages besides English.
- Fee: Roughly $24.50 for a standard 4-year license and $26.50 for a TIPIC (permit) -- Ohio raised its BMV service fee from $5 to $8 in 2026, so confirm the exact current total at a Deputy Registrar License Agency.

- Proof of identity, date of birth, Social Security number, and Ohio address

Ohio-Specific Rules
Minor & Provisional Licensing
- Minimum age for the vision screening and knowledge test is 15 years and 6 months.
- A TIPIC (permit) must be purchased within 60 days of passing the knowledge test, or you must restart with both tests.
- Under-21 driver ed: 24 hours classroom/online instruction, 8 hours driving time, plus 50 hours logged supervised driving (10 at night).
- Drivers under 18 must hold the TIPIC at least 6 months before licensing; 18+ applicants have no minimum hold.
- A temporary resident 21+ only needs to hold the TIPIC 14 days -- far shorter than the 6-month minimum for under-18 applicants.
- TIPIC holders age 16-17 may drive with any licensed 21+ adult, except midnight-6 a.m., when it must be a parent, guardian, or custodian.
- Any mobile electronic device use is banned for TIPIC holders, regardless of age.
- The parent/guardian who co-signs a minor's license is jointly and severally liable for the minor's damages until age 18.
- Under-18 automatic suspensions: 2 moving violations = 3 months; 3 moving violations = 1 year.
- Online knowledge testing allows only 2 attempts in 6 months; in-person testing is unlimited, one attempt per day.
- Temporary residents with a valid license from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, or Taiwan are exempt from driver education.
- The written exam is 40 multiple-choice questions, with a 75% passing rate needed.
DUI Laws & Penalties
- BAC thresholds: .08% for any age, .04% for commercial drivers, .02% for drivers under 21.
- Testing over the limit (ALS): 90 days for a first offense, rising to 1, 2, then 3 years with prior OVI convictions.
- Refusing a chemical test (ALS) is penalized more heavily than failing one: 1 year for a first refusal, up to 5 years with priors.
- OVUAC (underage alcohol consumption while driving) carries a 3-month to 2-year suspension, plus a remedial course and retaking the exam.
- 5+ OVI convictions within 20 years triggers Ohio's Habitual OVI/OMVI Offender Registry, with possible vehicle forfeiture.
- Driving under suspension is a first-degree misdemeanor -- up to a $1,000 fine and a possible additional 1-year suspension.
- A vehicle owner who knowingly lets a suspended driver operate their car faces the same penalty as the driver.
Speed, Right-of-Way & Legal Rules
- Default speed limit in an alley within a municipal corporation is 15 mph, unless otherwise posted.
- Default speed limit in a school zone during recess and arrival/dismissal hours is 20 mph, unless otherwise posted.
- Default speed limit on all rural freeways is 70 mph, unless otherwise posted.
- Default speed limit on urban and rural freeways/expressways without traffic control signals is 65 mph, unless otherwise posted.
- Handheld device violations (18+) escalate: 2 points/$150 (1st), 3 points/$250 (2nd), 4 points/$500 + possible 90-day suspension (3rd+) -- fines double in a work zone.
- Under-18 electronic device use (even hands-free) escalates faster: 60-day suspension + $150 (1st), 1-year suspension + $300 (2nd).
- 12+ points within 2 years triggers a license suspension; 6 points triggers a warning letter.
- Point values vary by violation: 2 for most moving violations, 4 for willful/wanton disregard, 6 for failing to stop and identify after a crash.
Emergency Vehicles, School Buses & Work Zones
- A school bus flashes amber lights when preparing to stop (not required to stop yet), then red lights and a stop arm once fully stopped (must stop).
- Ohio's Move Over Law covers police, fire, tow trucks, snowplows, waste collection, highway maintenance, and utility vehicles with warning lights on.
- Speeding in a work zone can mean doubled fines and possible jail time.
- Proof of insurance is required when a crash causes more than $400 in property damage -- a notably low threshold.
Parking Rules & Technique
- Parallel parking: no more than 12 inches from the curb.
- No stopping, parking, or standing in or within 20 feet of an intersection or crosswalk.
- No stopping, parking, or standing within 10 feet of a fire hydrant.
- No stopping, parking, or standing within one foot of another parked vehicle.
Defensive Driving
- Following a motorcyclist calls for a minimum 4-second following distance -- longer in wet conditions.
- Headlights are required any time wipers are in use for precipitation, and during rain/snow/fog regardless of the time of day.
- Booster seats are required for children age 4 to under 8, unless the child is 4'9" or taller.
- Knowingly carrying a passenger under 16 in an open cargo area above 25 mph is banned, with narrow exceptions.
