Oklahoma DMV Cheat Sheet
A condensed study guide for the Service Oklahoma written knowledge test — test logistics, plus the Oklahoma-specific rules most likely to differ from what you already know. - Test length varies: The real Class D written knowledge test is 20 multiple-choice questions, and you need 15 correct to pass -- this site's own Oklahoma practice test also samples 20 questions per attempt to match.
- Fee: A failed retest costs $4, and a replacement license or ID card costs $25; fees are effective as of the June 1, 2025 schedule.
- Documents required:
- Primary ID (such as a certified U.S. birth certificate, unexpired U.S. passport, or an Oklahoma license/ID originally issued after November 1, 2007)
- Proof of your Social Security Number
- Proof of auto liability insurance, if you're taking the driving test
- A driver education completion certificate or, for the Parent-Taught program, the SOK-approved Parent-Taught Affidavit and purchase receipt (if you're under 18 or applying for a Learner Permit at 15)
- If you don't pass: You must wait at least one day after failing the written test before retesting. The driving test can be attempted 3 times after your date of eligibility, then only once every 30 days after that.
- Online testing: The written knowledge test can be taken online through Service Oklahoma's proctored Know2 Drive system, with two attempts allowed before you must visit a Service Oklahoma or licensed-operator location in person; the driving skills test itself must always be taken in person.
Oklahoma-Specific Rules
Minor & Provisional Licensing
- A Learner Permit is available at 15 only if the teen is taking or has completed an approved driver education course; at 16, a Learner Permit doesn't require driver education.
- The Learner Permit must be held at least 180 days, and the holder must be at least 16 years old, before the driving test can be taken.
- The Intermediate License can be earned at 16 with a driver-education completion certificate, or at 16 1/2 without one.
- The Intermediate restriction lifts after 6 months for driver-education graduates, or after 1 year for non-graduates, and requires a Work Zone Safe completion certificate.
- GDL driving hours are 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., with exceptions for work, school, church, related activities, or when a licensed driver 21+ is in the car.
- GDL drivers may carry only one passenger unless all passengers share the teen's household or a licensed driver at least 21 years old rides along.
- A moving-violation conviction freezes a GDL driver at their current level for 6 months from the conviction date.
- A motorcycle-only license is available at 14, limited to 300cc or less, ridden 4:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m. with no passenger, until age 16.
- Anyone under 18 getting a motorcycle license or endorsement must complete a certified state-approved motorcycle basic rider course.
Licensing, REAL ID & Renewal
- Since May 7, 2025, a REAL ID license/ID or a document like a U.S. Passport is required to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal facilities.
- A license is issued for 4 or 8 years from the month the fee was paid, expiring on the last day of that month, and can be renewed up to 1 year early.
- You must notify Service Oklahoma within 10 days of a name or address change.
Insurance & Financial Responsibility
- Minimum liability coverage is $25,000 per person injured/killed, $50,000 per accident for two or more, and $25,000 for property damage.
- Failing to show proof of insurance on request can mean a fine up to $250, up to 30 days in jail, or both, plus suspension of license and registration.
Child Passenger Safety
- Children under 8 years old need a child restraint or, once 4 and under 4'9" tall, a seat belt; the restraint must stay rear-facing until age 2 or its weight/height limit.
Speed Limits & the Basic Speed Rule
- Default speed limits: 75 mph on controlled-access highways, 80 mph on turnpikes, 65 mph on undivided state highways, 55 mph on county roads, 35 mph in state parks/wildlife refuges, 25 mph in marked school zones.
- A Basic Speed Rule conviction can bring a fine up to $654 and up to 30 days in jail, doubled in active school/construction zones.
Move Over Law & School Buses
- The Bernardo-Mills Move Over Law requires changing lanes away from a stationary vehicle with flashing lights when safe, or slowing down if you can't.
- Failing to stop for a school bus loading or unloading with red lights flashing brings a mandatory one-year license revocation.
Railroad Crossings
- When a stop is required at a railroad crossing, stop within 50 feet but not less than 15 feet of the nearest rail.
Right-of-Way, Pedestrians & Bicycles
- Stop at least 15 feet from a blind pedestrian in the roadway or at an intersection and let them pass.
- Leave at least 3 feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist traveling in the same direction.
Parking Rules
- It's illegal to park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, 20 feet of an intersection crosswalk, or 50 feet of a railroad crossing, among other unlawful-parking distances.
Following, Turning & Passing
- Allow one car length per 10 mph of speed, or use the three-second rule (four in bad weather).
- In a motorcade or funeral procession outside business/residential areas, leave at least 200 feet between vehicles.
- Signal at least 100 feet, or 1/3 of a block, before turning, changing lanes, slowing, or stopping.
- Passing on the left needs at least 200 feet of clear roadway, and passing is barred within 100 feet of an obstructed view.
Headlights, Distraction & Flood Safety
- Dim high beams within 1,000 feet of an oncoming vehicle and within 600 feet of a vehicle you're following.
- Texting while driving has been illegal since 2015, and Learner/Intermediate license holders risk suspension for hand-held device use.
- Most vehicles float in as little as 2 feet of water, and 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock a person off their feet -- never drive around flood barricades.
DUI Laws & Penalties
- Implied Consent means refusing a BAC test brings automatic revocation, even without drinking; a 0.08+ BAC (or any amount under 21) revokes privileges even without a conviction.
- Under Zero Tolerance for drivers under 21, any measurable alcohol is unlawful: a first revocation is 6 months, a second is 12 months.
- A first DUI conviction (0.08+ BAC) is a misdemeanor with 10 days-1 year in jail and up to a $1,000 fine; a second within 10 years becomes a felony.
Points System & Mandatory Revocation
- 10 or more points within 5 years suspends a license; reckless driving and failing to stop for a school bus each carry 4 points.
- Points drop 2 per clean 12-month period, hit zero after 3 years with no violations, and a Driver Compliance/Defensive Driving course removes 2 more (once every 24 months).
- Convictions like DUI, vehicle-related manslaughter, or hit-and-run bring mandatory revocation of 6 months to 3 years.
Testing Process & Identity Requirements
- Relocating sex-offense or violent-crime convicts must register with the Department of Corrections within 10 days and local law enforcement within 3 days.
- Failing the written test means waiting at least one day to retest; the driving test allows 3 tries after eligibility, then once every 30 days.
- No pets or extra passengers are allowed during the driving test, and it won't run if the examiner judges the roads too slick or hazardous.
- Windshield tint can't extend more than 5 inches from the AS-1 line, and you need a current insurance verification form that doesn't exclude the driver.
