In a DMV office, you may be able to retest the same day
If you fail the knowledge test at a DMV office, Oregon's manual says you may test again the same day, depending on the office's testing resource availability. That's a meaningfully faster turnaround than states that impose a mandatory multi-day waiting period after every failed attempt.
Because it depends on office availability rather than being a guaranteed same-day retest, it's worth asking staff at the counter what their specific policy is that day, especially if you've traveled some distance for your appointment.
Online, you get two tries in 24 hours -- and four total before you must go in person
If you're testing through DMV2U online, a failed attempt lets you retest up to two times within a 24-hour period. Across all your online attempts, you get up to four tries total before Oregon requires you to switch to testing at a physical DMV office.
This cap exists to prevent someone from repeatedly guessing their way through an online test with unlimited attempts -- after your fourth online failure, the in-person testing environment (with its own supervision) becomes the only path forward.
Cheating carries a much steeper penalty than simply failing
Failing honestly and getting caught cheating are treated very differently. If DMV determines you cheated on a knowledge test -- through talking, writing or note-taking, cell phone use, operating any electronic device, or letting someone else take the test for you -- you fail the test and won't be allowed to test again for 90 days.
That 90-day lockout is far longer than the same-day or 24-hour retest windows available to someone who simply answers questions wrong, so it's worth taking the testing rules (no notes, no devices, no help) seriously even under pressure.
The drive test has its own, separate retest rule
Failing the behind-the-wheel drive test works differently from the knowledge test: if you fail, you must wait until the next business day before retaking it. There's no same-day retest option for the drive test the way there sometimes is for the knowledge test in an office.
Because drive tests are by appointment only, and DMV recommends scheduling at least three weeks ahead, a failed drive test can mean a real delay if you need to book a new appointment slot rather than simply walking back in the next business day.
A failed test doesn't cost you your permit or restart your clock
Nothing in the manual suggests that failing a knowledge or drive test attempt affects your existing instruction permit or the 6-month hold period an under-18 applicant is working through. A failed attempt is a setback on the testing side, not a reset on the licensing timeline itself.
That's worth keeping in mind if a failed attempt feels discouraging -- the practical cost is the retest wait (same day, 24 hours, or next business day depending on which test and how you're testing), not a loss of progress toward eligibility.
