Two different clocks: how long the permit is valid, and how long you must hold it
A South Dakota Instruction Permit itself is valid for 5 years from issuance, or until the expiration date on the applicant's underlying immigration documents, whichever comes first. That's simply how long the card remains usable before it would need to be renewed like any other credential.
But that 5-year validity window is separate from the minimum hold period a minor must clear before they're even eligible to upgrade to the next stage. Confusing the two is a common mistake -- having a 5-year-valid card doesn't mean a 14-year-old can walk in and upgrade the next week.
Minors face a 275-day hold, cut to 180 days with driver education
A South Dakota Instruction Permit holder under 18 must hold the permit continuously for 275 days before upgrading to a Restricted Minor's Permit or Operator's License. That drops to 180 days if the applicant completes an approved Department of Education driver education course and scores 80% or better on both the written and driving portions.
This gap is meaningful in practice -- nearly 3 months of difference between the two paths -- and it's one of the clearer incentives South Dakota builds into its law to reward completing a formal driver education course rather than learning entirely through informal family supervision.
Adult permit holders face no fixed hold period at all
An Instruction Permit holder who is already 18 or older when they apply faces none of the minor's hold-period math. After passing the vision and knowledge tests, an adult simply needs to pass the driving test whenever they're ready in order to upgrade to a full Operator's License.
This is a real structural difference worth knowing if you're helping an adult family member get licensed for the first time -- there's no 275-day or 180-day countdown to track, just readiness for the road test itself.
The motorcycle permit track runs on its own separate schedule
A Motorcycle Instruction Permit is valid for just 1 year, not 5, and carries its own hold-period rules: 275 days for a minor under 18, reduced to 180 days with driver education, and reduced further if the applicant also completes an authorized motorcycle safety course on top of that. Time already spent holding a car Instruction Permit can even count toward that reduced motorcycle requirement.
If a minor's Motorcycle Instruction Permit expires before they've cleared the hold period, they're required to obtain an entirely new Instruction Permit and start the clock over -- a real consequence worth planning around if a motorcycle endorsement is the eventual goal.
What happens if the permit lapses before you upgrade
Because a standard Instruction Permit is valid for a full 5 years, most applicants clear their hold period and pass their tests well before the card itself would expire -- the practical constraint is almost always the hold period and test readiness, not the card's own expiration date.
Still, it's worth checking your permit's actual expiration date against your household's driving-education timeline, especially if a minor took a long break from practicing. Letting the underlying immigration or identity documents that anchored the permit's validity period lapse can shorten that 5-year window unexpectedly.
