Just moved to South Dakota?

A new South Dakota resident with a valid out-of-state non-commercial license has 90 days to apply for a South Dakota license (30 days for a CDL holder), and 90 days to register a vehicle brought in from another state. Minimum car insurance in South Dakota

The manual describes acceptable proof-of-financial-responsibility options (a liability policy, a surety bond, a $50,000 State Treasurer deposit, or self-insurance for 26+ vehicles) without printing a dollar figure for the policy option; South Dakota's standard minimum liability coverage is 25/50/25 ($25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident bodily injury, $25,000 property damage) per independently corroborated external sources. You'll need proof of coverage to register a vehicle, and again if you're ever stopped or in a crash — carrying only the state minimum is legal, but it may not cover the full cost of a serious accident you cause.

Renewing your license

A standard South Dakota license is valid 5 years and renewable online up to 180 days before expiration -- except for someone turning 21 with 5 years or less remaining, whose license instead expires 30 days after that birthday.

Do you need a REAL ID?

Since May 7, 2025, the TSA has required a REAL ID-compliant license or ID — marked with a star in the upper right corner — or a valid passport to fly domestically or enter certain federal buildings. A standard license still works for driving; REAL ID only matters for federal ID purposes. Getting one for the first time requires an in-person visit even in states that otherwise support fully online renewal, since it's a federal identity requirement, not just a state license update.
