How many questions are on the DC written knowledge exam?

For applicants 21 and older, it's 25 multiple-choice questions with a 60-minute time limit. Applicants 16-20 in the GRAD program take a 30-question Learner Permit Knowledge Test with a 75-minute limit.

What score do I need to pass the written test?

80% -- at least 20 of 25 questions correct for the standard test, or 24 of 30 for the GRAD Learner Permit test.

How much does a DC learner permit or license cost?

A Learner Permit is $20 and a Provisional License is $20. The knowledge test is $10 at a DC DMV service center, the road skills test is $10, and a full 8-year Driver License is $47.

What documents do I need to bring to apply?

Proof of your full legal name and date of birth, your Social Security number, and two proofs of current DC residency -- plus a signed parental/guardian consent form if you're under 18.

Can I retake the test if I fail?

Yes -- after failing the knowledge test, wait 3 calendar days to retest (12 months after 6 consecutive fails). After failing the road skills test, wait 72 hours (also 12 months after 6 consecutive fails).

How old do I have to be to get a DC learner permit?

At least 16 years old, after passing the knowledge test and vision screening (with parental consent required if you're under 18).

What are the stages of DC's GRAD graduated licensing program?

A Learner Permit at 16, a Provisional License at 16 1/2 after a 6-month hold and 40 supervised hours, then a Full Driver License after another 6-month hold and 10 hours of certified night driving.

Can I do any part of the DC licensing process online?
