The core documents
Bring your WA Number (WDL Number), your Social Security number (or a signed declaration if you're not eligible for one), and proof of identity. If you're applying for a permit before 15½, you'll also need proof of driver training course enrollment — if you're 15½ or older testing directly, nothing extra is required on that front.
Washington's own Driver Guide doesn't publish a fee table, so confirm the exact current cost — commonly cited around $35 for the instruction permit application — at dol.wa.gov or a licensing office before your appointment.
Your vehicle needs real, checked equipment for the skills exam
The vehicle used for the Driving Skills Exam must be legally licensed and registered, with proof of current liability insurance showing either the policy holder's name or the vehicle's description, and be in safe operating condition. Brake lights, signal lights, and seat belts must all work — your examiner verifies every requirement before the exam begins.
A problem with any of these items is worth catching before your appointment — the examiner's check happens right at the start, so there's no opportunity to fix something once you've arrived and the exam is set to begin.
Only you and the examiner — with two specific exceptions
During the Driving Skills Exam, you and the examiner are the only people allowed in the vehicle. Washington makes exceptions for service animals and sign language interpreters, but otherwise the vehicle needs to be clear of other passengers.
This matters for planning your appointment logistics — if you're relying on someone else to drive you to the test site, they'll need to wait outside the vehicle during the exam itself rather than riding along.
Two ways to actually take the exams

Testing through your driver training school can be a convenience if you're already going through that program — the school already has your course records on file, which can simplify the process compared to a separate licensing-office appointment.
The knowledge exam comes first, always
You must pass the Driving Knowledge Exam before you're eligible to take the Driving Skills Exam — there's no way to attempt the skills portion first or take them in a different order.
Once you pass the knowledge exam, remember you have up to 2 years to complete the skills exam — a real, usable window if your practice hours or scheduling take longer than expected.
