Three separate document categories
All applicants for a Montana driver license or ID card must provide required documents from each of three categories: proof of authorized presence, proof of identity, and proof of Montana residence.

Your identity gets checked against Social Security Administration records
The full legal name and date of birth on your application must match the primary document you provide, and will be checked against the Social Security Administration. You'll need to provide your Social Security number when applying.
If there's any discrepancy between your documents and what's on file with the SSA, it's worth resolving that ahead of your appointment -- the manual specifically frames this as something to fix now to avoid future problems for you and your family.
Parental consent, if you're under 18
If you're under 18, you must have a consent form signed by a parent, guardian, or responsible adult before testing may begin. Signing this form obligates that adult to accept financial responsibility for any damage resulting from your driving.
Coordinate this signature well before your appointment, since testing can't begin without it if you're a minor.
Appointments aren't always required, but often are
At participating driver license stations, appointments are required for all services except license renewal and license replacement. Visit cars.dojmt.gov and click Appointment Scheduling to check whether a station in your area requires or offers one.
Since this varies by station, confirm your specific local office's appointment policy rather than assuming every Montana MVD location works the same way.
Budget for the fees
A Class D basic license or learner license costs $5.00 per year, and since January 1, 2018, a 3% administrative fee applies to all motor vehicle transactions (with an exception for county-retained fees).
You can pay by cash, check, or credit/debit card, though American Express specifically isn't accepted -- worth knowing before you arrive expecting to pay with an Amex card.
