Montana Driver Handbook Guide
The official Montana driver's handbook covers a lot of ground — not all of it tested. This page maps its actual chapter structure, straight from the handbook's own table of contents, so you know what's in there before deciding whether to read the whole thing or lean on our cheat sheet instead. Chapters at a glance
- Chapter 1 | The Driver License — The core licensing chapter: license types, the three-step Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program, new-resident and military rules, fees, and renewal -- the densest chapter for this site's Minor & Provisional Licensing and Licensing Procedure clusters.
- Chapter 2 | Motor Vehicle Equipment — Required equipment (lights, mirrors, brakes, horn) plus safety belts and child restraints -- this site's source for the seatbelt and child-restraint facts.
- Chapter 3 | Signs, Signals, & Markings — Signs, traffic signals, roundabouts, railroad crossings, and school zone standards -- this site's source for the school-zone speed and doubled-fine facts.
- Chapter 4 | Driving Rules — Speed limits, right-of-way, school buses, funeral processions, parking, and motor vehicle insurance -- this site's primary source for the Rules of the Road and insurance-related facts.
- Chapter 5 | How to Drive Safely — Distracted driving, basic driving mechanics, seeing well, communicating, and space management -- includes the generic three/four-second following-distance guidance already covered by the national bank, so not used as a state-specific override here.
- Chapter 6 | Physical Requirements — Vision, drinking and driving, other drugs, and senior driver considerations -- this site's primary source for the DUI & Alcohol Laws cluster.
- Chapter 7 | Emergencies, Crashes, & Enforcement Stops — Vehicle emergencies, crash procedures, and what to do during a traffic stop -- practical safety content without much state-specific numeric detail.
- Chapter 8 | Penalties & Driving Records — License suspension/revocation categories and driving record content -- this site's source for the general license-loss facts, though the manual doesn't detail a numeric point/demerit system here.
What's actually tested
Montana's knowledge test draws most heavily from Chapter 1 (the GDL program and licensing procedure), Chapter 3 (school zones), Chapter 4 (school buses, parking, and insurance), and Chapter 6 (Montana's alcohol and drug laws) -- this site's cheat sheet and question bank focus on exactly that material.
Chapters 5 and 7 cover real, useful space-management and emergency-response skills but track closely to national conventions, so they aren't a meaningful source of Montana-specific exam questions. Notably, this manual doesn't print a statewide numeric speed-limit table the way many other states' manuals do -- speed limits are described as locally posted rather than tabulated.
